First launch
What Oxys DB Studio asks the first time it starts: theme, password protection, and the Welcome page.
The first time Oxys DB Studio starts, it asks two short questions, then opens the Connection Manager so you can add a connection straight away. Nothing connects to a database until you ask it to.
Steps
- Choose a theme. The Welcome to Oxys DB Studio box offers Light or Dark. The window previews your choice at once. Click OK. You can change it later in Edit > Preferences > Appearance.
- Choose how passwords are protected. The Password encryption box offers two options (see the table below). Pick one and click OK. You can change it later in the Security page of Preferences (under Advanced settings).
- Add a connection. The Connection Manager opens on top of the main window. Continue with Your first connection, or close it to look around first.
If you turned off the Connection Manager at start-up, the Welcome page shows instead, with a Get started list:
- Add your first connection opens the Connection Manager on the New Connection wizard.
- Import connections from other clients opens the import box of the Connection Manager (see Import connections).
- Read the documentation opens this documentation.
The Welcome page appears by itself only once. Open it again any time with Help > Welcome.
Password protection options
| Option | What it does | Asked at each start? |
|---|---|---|
| Default encryption | Saved passwords are encrypted in your system’s credential store (the Secret Service on Linux, the Windows credential store). | No |
| Cryptographic key store | Saved connections and passwords are kept in a key store locked by a master password you type twice now. | Yes, the master password |
With the key store, a forgotten master password cannot be recovered, and neither can the connections and passwords it protects. Choose it only if you will remember the password.
The Quickstart page
When no tab is open, the work area shows the Quickstart page:
| Part | What it offers |
|---|---|
| Recent Connections | Your most recent connections, newest first; one click connects. Read-only connections show a padlock. |
| Open Connection Manager, Create a new connection | Shortcuts to the Connection Manager and its wizard |
| Tasks | Open Task Manager, Create a new task |
| Quick Options | Enable dark theme, Automatically open Connection Manager at startup, Enable Session Restore |
| Help and Learning | Documentation, Keyboard shortcuts, What’s new, Report a problem |
Tips
- Session restore is on by default: when you quit and start again, your connections and tabs come back, with their queries, pipelines and unsaved scripts. Restored queries are not run again until you ask. Turn it off in Quick Options or in Edit > Preferences > Behavior.
- If something in the system clipboard looks like a MongoDB connection string when you open the Connection Manager, the app offers to create a connection from it (New connection was detected). Tick Don’t show this message again to stop the offer.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Cause and fix |
|---|---|
| A Password encryption message says there is no credential store | Your Linux session has no Secret Service running. Choose the cryptographic key store, or install and start a Secret Service provider for your desktop. |
| The master password box appears at every start | You chose the cryptographic key store. Switch back to default encryption in Preferences > Security. |
| A Tabs Not Restored list appears at start | Some tabs of the previous session could not be reopened (for example a connection that no longer exists). Keep or discard them. |
