MongoDB-compatible databases
Amazon DocumentDB, Azure Cosmos DB for MongoDB, FerretDB and other databases that speak the MongoDB protocol: what to expect.
Several databases implement the MongoDB wire protocol without being MongoDB. Oxys DB Studio may connect to them, because it speaks that protocol, but they are not tested. A command such a database does not implement fails with that database’s own error message; nothing is emulated.
Status
| Database | Status |
|---|---|
| MongoDB 4.2 to 8.0 (standalone, replica set, sharded, TLS) | Tested on every release. |
| MongoDB 2.6 to 4.0 | Tested, with limits: see Older servers. |
| MongoDB Atlas | Connections work as with any server (mongodb+srv://, TLS, SCRAM and X.509). Browsing clusters from an Atlas account is not available. |
| Amazon DocumentDB | Not tested. May connect. |
| Azure Cosmos DB for MongoDB | Not tested. May connect. |
| FerretDB | Not tested. May connect. |
| Oracle Autonomous Database MongoDB API | Not tested. May connect. |
Connect to a compatible database
- Copy the connection string your provider gives you.
- Paste it in the New Connection wizard (URI or form).
- Check the SSL tab: many hosted services require TLS and sometimes their own root CA file (TLS/SSL).
- Test Connection, then Save.
Tips
- If your provider requires
retryWrites=false, untick Enable Retry Writes on the Advanced tab, or keep the option in the connection string. - Consider a Read-Only Lock while you check what works.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | What to do |
|---|---|
| A view or tool shows an error naming an unsupported command, stage or option | That database does not implement it. Other views keep working. |
| TLS errors with a hosted service | Download the provider’s CA bundle and choose it with Use own Root CA file. |
