Page through results
Move through a result page by page, change the page size, refresh, stop a slow query and count documents.
A collection tab never loads a whole collection. It reads one page of documents at a time, so even a collection of millions of documents opens quickly and memory use stays flat while you page.
Move between pages
- Open a collection (see The collection tab).
- Use the paging buttons of the Result toolbar, or their shortcuts:
| Button | Shortcut | Enabled when | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| First page | You are past the first page | Back to the first page | |
| Previous page | Ctrl+Alt+Left | You are past the first page | One page back |
| Next page | Ctrl+Alt+Right | There is a next page | One page forward |
| Last page | Always (it counts first if needed) | Jumps to the last non-empty page |
The range label shows where you are, for example Documents 51 to 100. An empty result reads No documents.
To know whether a next page exists, the application reads one document more than the page size; it never counts the collection just to page. Last page needs the total, so if it is not known yet it runs Count Documents first.
Change the page size
- Open the Page size list in the Result toolbar.
- Pick 1, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100 or 200, or type any whole number from 1 to 10,000 and press Enter.
The page reloads from the first document of the page you were on, so you keep your place. A value outside the range is refused with Page size must be a whole number from 1 to 10,000 and the previous size stays.
Where the starting page size comes from
| Source | Where to set it |
|---|---|
| This tab only | Right-click a collection > Open Collection With Custom Page Size… |
| One connection | Connection Manager > edit the connection > Default results page size |
| Everywhere | Preferences > General > Initial page size when showing result documents (default 50) |
The first one that is set wins, in the order of the table.
Refresh and stop
- Refresh (Ctrl+R) runs the query again for the current page.
- While a page loads, Refresh becomes Stop. Stopping, or closing the tab, cancels the query on the server too.
- Starting another page while one is loading cancels the first.
Count the documents
Click Count Documents in the status bar. The count runs in the background and can be cancelled (Cancel count, or from the Operations panel). With an empty query an estimate shows at once, marked with ≈, while the exact count runs.
Reference: paging and the query bar
| Setting | Effect on paging |
|---|---|
| Query bar Skip | Paging starts after this many documents |
| Query bar Limit | Paging stops after this many documents in total |
| Query bar Sort | The order pages follow (sorted by the server) |
| Clicking a column header | Sorts only the page on screen |
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | What it means |
|---|---|
| No documents on this page after a refresh | Documents were removed since you paged here. Use First page or Previous page. |
| The label adds that the page was truncated because documents are too large | A page is capped at 64 MiB of documents in total to protect memory. Use a smaller page size or a projection. |
| Next page stays greyed | There is no further document for the current query. |
