Organise connections in folders

Group saved connections in folders, move them, and load connections from another folder on disk such as a Git working tree.

Folders keep a long list of connections readable: one per environment, team or customer, for example. Folders can be nested.

Create a folder

  1. In the Connection Manager, click New folder.
  2. Type a Folder name:. The box shows where it is created (“In: …”, the folder selected in the list, or the root level).
  3. Confirm. The folder appears in the list.

Move connections into a folder

Either:

  • drag one or more selected connections onto a folder in the list (while dragging, a “Drop here to move to ” area takes them back out of every folder); or
  • open the connection dialog and choose the Connection folder: (or <root level>), then Save.

Click a folder’s arrow, or double-click it, to open or close it. The filter field searches inside folders and opens those that match.

Load connections from another folder

Connections are stored as files, one per connection (*.oxyconn.json), with sub-folders for your folders. You can point the application at another directory, for example a Git working tree shared with your team:

  1. Disconnect every connection.
  2. In the Connection Manager, click Connections folder.
  3. Click Choose Folder… and pick an existing directory. Its connection files and sub-folders are loaded.
  4. To go back, click Use Default Folder.

Passwords are never in those files: each person enters and saves their own.

Delete a folder

Right-click the folder in the Connection Manager and choose Delete Folder…. An empty folder is deleted at once. A folder that holds connections (in it or in its sub-folders) asks what to do with them:

  • Move to Root keeps the connections and moves them out of the folder;
  • Delete Connections deletes them with the folder, after a confirmation.

Deleting is refused while one of those connections is open: disconnect it first. It is also refused, before anything is deleted, when the folder holds other files than connections (a README, a .git folder): move the connections out instead, or remove those files first. Folder names cannot start with a dot.

Troubleshooting

ProblemWhat to do
Rename Folder… is refusedA folder of that name already exists at the same level.
Connections folder refuses to changeDisconnect all connections first. It is also refused while connections are protected by the master-password key store (Edit > Preferences > Advanced settings > Security).
A connection is shown read-onlyIts file was written by a newer version of the application; update to edit it.
